Same teams. Same stage. Same result: another UP championship.
The University of the Philippines successfully defended its UAAP football championship, narrowly edging rival University of Santo Tomas 1-0 in the final Sunday at the Ateneo University.
Sophomore striker Jinggoy Valmayor’s strike at the hour mark was enough for the Maroons to once again deny the Tigers, whom they also bested for last season’s crown. (read more)

Candidates for the upcoming University Student Council (USC) elections articulated their programs of action as they battled out in “UPFront,” an elections forum of the UP Economics Society on February 22.
Nominees for chairperson and vice chairperson of each party discussed their programs of action with one councilor.
Student Alliance for the Advancement of Democratic Rights in UP standard bearers Amancio Melad III and Soraya Escandor said “collective action” is the most effective form of action against the problems of society.
Therese Buergo, STAND UP candidate for councilor, stressed the importance of education as the “key to nation-building” as she lobbied for the fight for greater budget for state universities and colleges (SUCs).

The University of the Philippines kicked off its football crown defense during the opening day of the 74th UAAP football season with a hard-fought and ill-tempered 2-0 win over the Ateneo de Manila University Saturday at the Ateneo High School Football Field.
Juan Miguel Roy and Nii Aryee Ayi struck for the defending champions either side of halftime to defeat their neighbors from Katipunan, whose goalkeeper was sent off ten minutes from time.
“A win is a win, but I’m far from satisfied,” said UP Coach Anto Gonzales. “Overall the first game is always the most difficult game. I hope things will only get better,” he continued.
The Maroons took the lead in the 24th minute, courtesy of senior Roy. The defender drilled a perfectly executed corner kick taken by last season’s Rookie of the Year Jinggoy Valmayor past the diving Ateneo goalie RS Mantos. [read more]
