Same teams. Same stage. Same result: another UP championship.
The University of the Philippines successfully defended its UAAP football championship, narrowly edging rival University of Santo Tomas 1-0 in the final Sunday at the Ateneo University.
Sophomore striker Jinggoy Valmayor’s strike at the hour mark was enough for the Maroons to once again deny the Tigers, whom they also bested for last season’s crown. (read more)

Not even the rain could end UP’s dry spell in front of a goal.
The rematch of last year’s final saw multiple chances on goal for either side but neither was able to fully capitalize. Both teams also needed goal-line clearances to preserve a share of the spoils.
“I wanna win. I wanted to win,” said UP coach Anto Gonzales, who was unsatisfied with the draw.
With only minutes to go, the Maroons were denied a first goal in four matches when confusion in the UST defense allowed Jinggoy Valmayor to challenge for a bouncing ball in the UST penalty area. (read more)

UP whips Ateneo in UAAP football opener

The University of the Philippines kicked off its football crown defense during the opening day of the 74th UAAP football season with a hard-fought and ill-tempered 2-0 win over the Ateneo de Manila University Saturday at the Ateneo High School Football Field.
Juan Miguel Roy and Nii Aryee Ayi struck for the defending champions either side of halftime to defeat their neighbors from Katipunan, whose goalkeeper was sent off ten minutes from time.
“A win is a win, but I’m far from satisfied,” said UP Coach Anto Gonzales. “Overall the first game is always the most difficult game. I hope things will only get better,” he continued.
The Maroons took the lead in the 24th minute, courtesy of senior Roy. The defender drilled a perfectly executed corner kick taken by last season’s Rookie of the Year Jinggoy Valmayor past the diving Ateneo goalie RS Mantos. [read more]

Today, the Varsity Office finally released the tickets for the UAAP 74 Cheerdance Competition. I arrived at the College of Human Kinetics around 11:30 am to see how things are going. As expected, people were already lined up even though the tickets are supposed to be released at 3pm.
According to the guards of CHK, some students were already there as early as 6am. To prevent the Varsity Office from being crowded with students going crazy just to get tickets (and some of them gone mad actually), stubs were given. Unluckily, the stubs were only given to the first 250 students. Lucky are those who came there early.

But sucks to those who came there at around 10am onwards (which is still early relative to the actual time of the ticket release). Unluckily, not even a single ticket was given to them.

According to the staff at the Varsity Office, the Lowerbox tickets were all at the Admin. Na kanila chancellor daw. At around 2pm, a UP Pep Squad drummer announced that there are no more tickets for those who do not have stubs. She said that the host school is not releasing tickets for the CDC.

For desperate buyers, you might want to buy from scalpers who sell General Admission tickets for 400-600 Pesos and Upper Box B tickets for 800-1000 Pesos. Too bad they have to take advantage of the CDC hype.

The University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons were outplayed at both ends of the court, bowing to the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers, 49-68, in the 74th UAAP basketball competitions Sunday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
No Maroon scored in double figures, as Jelo Montecastro led UP with only nine points, while forward Mike Silungan, with only 10 percent shooting from beyond-the-arc, finished with just eight markers.
Guard Jett Manuel, who shined with 20 points in the Maroons’ victory over powerhouse Far Eastern University, was limited to just five points.
“We were outplayed, out coached, out everything,” said UP coach Ricky Dandan.

Manuel once again showed his prolific showing in the season, scoring 20 points off the bench as the Maroons snapped a three-game losing skid. Sophomore guard Jett Manuel’s hot shooting blazed the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons to a shocking 76-63 win over the second seeded Far Eastern University Tamaraws in the 74th UAAP basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum on Thursday.
“We’re all happy and excited we got our second win. It was a really big win for us,” said Manuel.

Its game plan was to put out a fire, but the Maroons could not get it done.
After a tough debut, rookie sensation Bobby Ray Parks came out on fire to lead the National University Bulldogs to a 75-66 triumph over the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons at the 74th University Athletic Association of the Philippines basketball competition Sunday at theAraneta Coliseum.
